Kulman Ghising Sworn In as Nepal’s Energy Minister

Must Read

Kulman Ghising is sworn in as Energy Minister in the interim government of Nepal.  Kulman Ghising is widely credited with ending the chronic power outages, also known as “load shedding,” that plagued Nepal for years. When he first took over as the Executive Director of the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) in September 2016, Nepal was experiencing up to 18 hours of daily load shedding.

The NEA was a loss-making entity for years. Under Ghising’s leadership, it became profitable, significantly improving its financial health. This was crucial for investing in new infrastructure and maintaining existing ones. His visible success and dedication earned him immense public support and trust, making him a popular figure in Nepal.

On August 11, 2021, Kulman Ghising was reappointed for his second term. However, he was removed from his position on March 24, 2025, despite his tenure being scheduled to end on August 9, 2025. His second term focused on consolidating the gains made, further improving reliability, and pushing for more ambitious hydropower projects and electricity exports.

In March this year, Opposition lawmakers obstructed the parliament, demanding a reply from the Prime Minister on why Kulman Ghising was sacked as the Managing Director at the Nepal Electricity Authority before completion of his tenure. Ghising was sacked on March 25 and Hitendra Man Shakya was appointed as new Executive Director of the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA).
