Kiren Rijiju and Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh likely to attend Tripura Legislative Assembly seminar in Agartala, focusing on accountability, responsibility, and duties of elected representatives from Panchayat to Parliament.

The Tripura Legislative Assembly is set to host a high-profile seminar-cum-workshop aimed at strengthening democratic accountability and enhancing the performance of elected representatives across the state. The event, scheduled for February 27 at Pragna Bhavan in Agartala, is expected to witness the participation of several prominent national and state leaders.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath on Wednesday confirmed that Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha Harivansh Narayan Singh and Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju are likely to attend the seminar. Harivansh Narayan Singh will deliver the keynote address, setting the tone for discussions centered on responsibility, accountability, and public service ethics.

Addressing media persons at the Assembly premises, Nath stated that the seminar aims to sensitize elected representatives from the grassroots level to the national stage. Members from the three-tier Panchayati Raj system, Municipal bodies, Members of District Councils (MDCs), MLAs, and MPs are expected to participate in the workshop. The initiative seeks to bridge the gap between public expectations and political responsibilities.

“The primary objective is to help elected members of various constitutional bodies understand the expectations voters have from them,” Nath said. He emphasized that accountability, sincerity, and responsibility are the three pillars of ideal public representation. According to him, expert speakers will guide participants on ethical conduct, transparent governance, and constructive public engagement.

The event will also be attended by Chief Minister Manik Saha, who has given his consent to be present. Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Choudhury has also been invited. Though he may not attend in person, he has assured representation from his party, ensuring bipartisan participation in the democratic dialogue.

Acting Speaker Ram Prasad Paul described the seminar as a first-of-its-kind initiative by the Tripura Legislative Assembly. He noted that legislators from the state had previously attended similar workshops outside Tripura and felt the need to organize a comparable platform locally to enhance exposure and knowledge-sharing among public representatives.

“This is perhaps the first time the Assembly is organizing such a seminar in Tripura. We have drawn inspiration from similar events held in other states. The goal is to strengthen democratic values and improve governance standards,” Paul said.

The seminar comes at a time when discussions around transparency, ethical leadership, and grassroots governance are gaining prominence nationwide. With senior parliamentary leaders in attendance, the workshop is expected to serve as a significant step toward reinforcing democratic accountability in Tripura and setting a benchmark for similar initiatives in other states.
