Tripura’s Khowai District Court has summoned Trinamool Congress leaders Abhishek Banerjee, Dola Sen, and Kunal Ghosh in connection with a 2021 case involving alleged misconduct with police personnel and an attempted attack on a police station. The accused have been directed to appear before the court on June 22.

A court in Tripura’s Khowai district has summoned several senior leaders of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), including party National General Secretary and Member of Parliament Abhishek Banerjee, Rajya Sabha MP Dola Sen, and newly elected MLA Kunal Ghosh, in connection with a 2021 case involving alleged misconduct with police personnel and an attempted vandalism of a police station.

According to Khowai District Court Public Prosecutor Abhijit Bhattacharjee, the case dates back to 2021 when police arrested 14 TMC workers in Khowai in connection with a separate case. The arrested individuals were later produced before a court as part of the legal process.

The prosecutor stated that during the developments surrounding the arrests, senior TMC leaders, including Abhishek Banerjee, Dola Sen, Kunal Ghosh, and then West Bengal Education Minister Bratya Basu, along with their supporters, allegedly misbehaved with the officer-in-charge of Khowai Police Station. They were also accused of attempting to vandalise the police station premises.

Following the incident, police registered a case against the accused individuals and subsequently submitted the charges before the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM), Khowai. After examining the matter, the court took cognisance of the case and initiated legal proceedings.

“The CJM took cognisance of the matter and issued summons against the accused persons,” Public Prosecutor Bhattacharjee said while speaking about the development.

The prosecutor further informed that Bratya Basu had challenged the proceedings against him before the High Court. Following legal scrutiny, Basu was discharged from the case, leaving the remaining accused to face further judicial proceedings.

“The other accused persons in the case, apart from Bratya Basu, will face prosecution in accordance with law,” Bhattacharjee stated.

As part of the ongoing proceedings, the Khowai District Court issued summons in April this year, directing the accused individuals to appear personally before the court. The court has fixed June 22 as the date for their appearance.

The case stems from a politically significant period in Tripura’s recent history. In 2021, the Trinamool Congress intensified efforts to expand its organisational footprint in the northeastern state ahead of future electoral contests. Several senior leaders from West Bengal had frequently visited Tripura to strengthen the party’s base and engage with local supporters.

The alleged incident occurred during one such political visit when tensions reportedly escalated following the arrest of TMC workers. The events eventually resulted in the registration of the criminal case that has now progressed to the stage of court summons.

The latest development is likely to attract political attention both in Tripura and West Bengal, given the prominence of the leaders involved. However, there was no immediate response from Abhishek Banerjee, Dola Sen, Kunal Ghosh, or the Trinamool Congress regarding the court’s summons and the upcoming hearing.
