A heated exchange between BJP MLA Ratan Chakraborty and Acting Sabhadhipati Biswajit Shil during a Kharchi Mela preparatory meeting in Tripura has sparked debate over financial transparency, accountability, and festival fund management. Despite the controversy, authorities finalized major arrangements for the seven-day Kharchi Mela beginning July 22.
Preparations for Tripura’s iconic Kharchi Mela, one of the state’s largest and most revered religious and cultural festivals, took an unexpected political turn on Monday after a heated exchange between BJP MLA Ratan Chakraborty and West Tripura Zilla Parishad Acting Sabhadhipati Biswajit Shil during an official preparatory meeting. A video capturing the confrontation quickly surfaced on social media, triggering widespread discussion over financial transparency and accountability in the management of the annual festival.
The incident occurred during a high-level preparatory meeting held at the conference hall of the West Tripura District Magistrate’s office. The meeting was convened to review arrangements for the upcoming Kharchi Mela, scheduled to begin on July 22 at the historic Chaturdasha Devata temple grounds in Khayerpur.
During the discussions, Acting Sabhadhipati Biswajit Shil raised a series of questions regarding the allocation and utilization of funds associated with last year’s festival. He alleged that expenditure accounts from the previous edition of the fair had not been presented before members and sought clarification on how revenues generated through shop plot allocations and vendor tokens were utilized.
Shil further claimed that several elected representatives and members of the district cultural committee were not adequately consulted during key decision-making processes related to the festival. Stressing the importance of transparency in public events involving substantial financial resources, he urged authorities to make detailed financial records available for scrutiny.
His remarks prompted a strong response from BJP MLA Ratan Chakraborty, who rejected the allegations and defended the existing organizational framework of the Kharchi Mela. Chakraborty maintained that the festival has traditionally been conducted in a systematic and transparent manner and argued that attempts to create controversy over financial matters were unnecessary at a time when preparations were in full swing.
The MLA emphasized that Kharchi Mela is not merely a religious event but a symbol of social harmony and cultural unity in Tripura. He reiterated that all arrangements were being carried out according to established procedures and assured that preparations for the festival would continue without disruption.
Despite the sharp exchange, officials successfully finalized several important arrangements for the seven-day festival. Authorities reviewed plans for infrastructure improvements, including enhanced lighting systems, electricity supply, drinking water facilities, sanitation measures, and the deployment of medical teams to ensure the safety and convenience of visitors.
Traffic management and parking arrangements were also discussed extensively to minimize congestion during the event, which attracts thousands of devotees and tourists every year. Special attention will be given to crowd management and public safety throughout the festival period.
In addition, various government departments will set up exhibition stalls showcasing welfare schemes and developmental projects. Displays highlighting twelve years of initiatives undertaken by the central government are also expected to be featured during the fair.
The Information and Cultural Affairs Department will organize daily cultural programmes, bringing together artists and performers from different parts of Tripura. Food courts and temporary market facilities will also be established to accommodate the large number of pilgrims and visitors expected to attend.
Meanwhile, the viral video of the exchange has intensified public calls for greater accountability and transparency in the management of festival finances. Political observers noted that although the discussion remained within the framework of an official meeting, it exposed differences among local BJP leaders and highlighted the growing public demand for clear financial reporting in events supported by public funds.
Kharchi Mela remains one of Tripura’s most significant cultural and religious celebrations, drawing devotees, tourists, and cultural enthusiasts from across India and abroad. Rooted in centuries-old traditions, the festival is widely regarded as a symbol of communal harmony, bringing together people from diverse communities, faiths, and backgrounds.
