In a significant development, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal of Delhi found himself facing a prolonged legal ordeal as a Delhi court extended his judicial custody until April 15. This decision came following his appearance before Special Judge Kaweri Baweja of the Rouse Avenue Court, marking the latest chapter in a complex legal saga centered around allegations of involvement in a money laundering case linked to an alleged excise policy scam.

Kejriwal’s judicial custody extension stemmed from the expiration of his previously extended custody under the Enforcement Directorate (ED), which had sought his further detention for interrogation purposes. Notably, the court’s decision unfolded against a backdrop of heavy security, with Kejriwal represented virtually by his legal counsel.

During the proceedings, both the ED and Kejriwal’s defense team presented arguments remotely. The ED, through Additional Solicitor General S.V. Raju, reiterated its stance seeking Kejriwal’s judicial custody, citing alleged non-cooperation and evasive responses during interrogation. Of particular note was the claim that Kejriwal had not provided access to the password of his phone, a matter raised previously by the ED.

In response, Kejriwal’s legal representatives, Senior Advocates Vikram Chaudhary and Ramesh Gupta, advocated for their client’s interests, underscoring his application for specific accommodations during his custody. This application included requests for a special diet, access to prescribed medications, as well as provisions for religious items such as books and a locket.

The court’s decision to extend Kejriwal’s judicial custody was underpinned by considerations of the ongoing investigation, with Judge Baweja emphasizing the need for further interrogation and confrontation in accordance with due process. In its ruling, the court also underscored directives for the preservation of CCTV footage and the provision of necessary medical care to Kejriwal during his time in custody.

Kejriwal’s legal woes trace back to his arrest by the ED on March 21, following a lengthy interrogation session at his official residence in Delhi. Throughout the proceedings, the ED has maintained its characterization of Kejriwal as a central figure in the alleged excise scam, alleging collusion with other ministers of the Delhi government, AAP leaders, and other individuals.

As the legal proceedings continue to unfold, the case remains a focal point of public attention, with implications extending beyond the realm of politics, underscoring the complexities and challenges inherent in the intersection of law, governance, and accountability.
