Jitendra Seeks CM’s Intervention Over Tragic Child Deaths Across Tripura

In a letter to Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, Leader of Opposition in the Tripura Legislative Assembly, Jitendra Chaudhury, has expressed deep sorrow over the recent spate of tragic child deaths in the state and urged for immediate government action, including financial support, independent investigations, and administrative accountability.

Chaudhury’s letter, penned with “a heavy heart”, cites three heart-wrenching incidents involving the deaths of children in different parts of the state — at Agartala’s Chanmari suburb, Ramsadhu Para in Mohanpur Sub-Division, and Nalsing Sardar Para in South Tripura.

In his note, Chaudhury appreciated the Chief Minister’s personal visit to the family of Prasenjit Debnath (11) and Priyanka Debnath (7), who tragically drowned on May 17, 2025, in a water-filled construction pit allegedly left open by a private promoter. “Your kind visit along with Minister Sushanta Chowdhury and financial assistance to the bereaved family is commendable, though it can never truly compensate for their irreplaceable loss,” he wrote.

Chaudhury, who visited the site a day later along with local MLA Sudip Sarker and former MLA Shankar Prasad Datta, demanded an independent inquiry by an expert team to dispel any doubts surrounding the incident.

…They have run from pillar to post — from the Village Committee Office to the Tehsil — but to no avail. It is inhumane and painful

The Opposition leader also raised alarm over two more tragedies. On June 28, 2024, two tribal girl students — Pivali Debbarma (10) and Privangka Debbarma (9) — drowned in a forest department water body near Ramashankar Junior Basic School while returning home. Despite appeals, their impoverished families are yet to receive any financial assistance from local authorities. “They have run from pillar to post — from the Village Committee Office to the Tehsil — but to no avail. It is inhumane and painful,” he said, urging immediate support for the affected families.

Chaudhury also pointed to a chilling case of suspected child abuse and murder on May 20, 2025, involving a 9-year-old girl from Nalsing Sardar Para under Sabroom Sub-Division. The child’s body was found in a forest the next day, bearing visible injuries. “The local community believes the child was brutally assaulted before being murdered. Justice demands a thorough and transparent investigation, followed by the strongest punishment for the perpetrator(s),” he stated.

“These tragedies, though separated by time and geography, reflect systemic gaps in our administrative and safety mechanisms. It is time we fixed them,”

Calling for “adequate financial, moral and legal relief” for all three families, Chaudhury urged the government to act promptly and compassionately. “These tragedies, though separated by time and geography, reflect systemic gaps in our administrative and safety mechanisms. It is time we fixed them,” he concluded.

A copy of a letter from social worker Amulya Debbarma, highlighting the plight of the families affected in Mohanpur, was also enclosed with Chaudhury’s appeal.
