Jampui Hill concluded the mid-June weekend with a massive community-led plantation drive, planting over 1,000 saplings across ten villages. Organized by the Mizo Convention, the initiative aims to beautify the hill range, support wildlife habitats, combat climate change, and promote environmental conservation through collective community participation.
In a major community-driven effort to promote environmental awareness through practical action, all ten Village Councils across the Jampui Hill range, under the supervision of the Mizo Convention, today organised a voluntary tree plantation drive and planted more than 1,000 saplings of various species.
The plantation programme was undertaken with three specific objectives: to beautify Jampui Hill by planting flowering trees, to create suitable habitats for birds and wildlife through the planting of fruit-bearing trees, and to help mitigate global warming and climate change by planting evergreen shade trees.
Under the guidance and leadership of the respective Village Councils, suitable locations were identified for each category of saplings. The Village Councils have also committed themselves to safeguarding and nurturing the planted saplings until they reach maturity.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Zairemthiama Pachuau, General Secretary of Mizo Convention, stated, “Today’s plantation activity is a community-led initiative undertaken to commemorate World Environment Day observed on June 5. We would like to thank Jampui Hill Block Development Officer Debabrata Roy and BAC Chairman B.C. Nunga for their administrative support. Our sincere gratitude also goes to SDFO Suman Mitra, TFS and DFO Suman Malla, IFS for providing the saplings and extending valuable technical guidance.”
He further added, “Beyond our expectations, several schools across the hill joined the initiative by planting hundreds of trees within their campuses. We deeply appreciate their participation and leadership in fostering environmental stewardship among the younger generation.”
