Filmmaker James Gunn has described Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman as DC Studios’ “diamond characters,” highlighting the importance of the iconic superheroes in the franchise’s long-term cinematic strategy. The DC Studios co-chief has also clarified the much-discussed eight-to-ten-year roadmap, explaining how standalone films and interconnected stories will coexist within the evolving DC Universe.
Gunn shared his thoughts through a post on Threads, revisiting comments he and fellow DC Studios co-chief Peter Safran made in 2022 about their plans for the future of the superhero franchise. He explained that the original vision was never limited to a single continuous storyline, but also included developing individual films that could stand independently while contributing to a broader narrative where appropriate.
According to Gunn, the strategy was outlined when the new leadership began its work in January 2023. He said some projects would follow a standalone format, similar to the approach used in the Guardians of the Galaxy films, while others would form part of a larger connected storyline.
As an example, Gunn pointed to Clayface as a standalone project and described the Superman storyline as part of a broader narrative structure. However, he stressed that individual films within an interconnected story should still be satisfying experiences on their own, regardless of whether audiences have watched every other DC production.
The filmmaker’s comments underline an important aspect of DC Studios’ approach: building a shared cinematic universe without making every film dependent on multiple previous releases. The strategy could allow audiences to enjoy individual superhero stories while giving dedicated fans additional connections and character development across different projects.
Gunn also clarified that the frequently mentioned eight-to-ten-year roadmap involved more than planning storylines for future films. It was intended as a wider strategy for DC Studios, covering character development, creative freedom for filmmakers, different storytelling styles and the expansion of the franchise beyond its most recognisable superheroes.
He identified Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman as the studio’s primary “diamond characters.” At the same time, Gunn said the broader plan included developing comparatively smaller characters into major attractions. He cited Krypto, John Stewart and Peacemaker as examples of characters who could gain greater prominence through the studio’s projects.
The approach reflects DC Studios’ intention to balance its most established comic-book heroes with less prominent characters who could attract new audiences. Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman have long been central to DC’s identity, while characters such as Peacemaker and John Stewart offer opportunities to explore different genres, personalities and themes within the superhero universe.
Gunn also emphasised the importance of allowing filmmakers greater creative freedom. His vision includes accommodating different tones and age ratings rather than forcing every production to follow an identical style. This flexibility could help DC Studios develop projects that appeal to different audience groups while maintaining a recognisable connection to the wider franchise.
The filmmaker referenced influences and ideas associated with Star Wars and George R. R. Martin as part of the broader thinking behind the roadmap. His remarks suggest that the studio’s ambitions extend beyond individual superhero films to a more comprehensive entertainment strategy involving storytelling, character development and creative collaboration.

Expressing optimism about the direction of the franchise, Gunn said he was excited to see the various elements of his vision beginning to come together. He also highlighted his enthusiasm for Man of Tomorrow, signalling anticipation for the upcoming Superman-related story.
Gunn’s latest comments offer further insight into how DC Studios intends to shape its cinematic future. By placing its iconic superheroes at the centre of the strategy while encouraging standalone storytelling, interconnected narratives and creative experimentation, the studio aims to establish a flexible and sustainable foundation for its expanding DC Universe.
