Supporters of IPFT and Tipra Motha got involved in a violent clash at Lathabari Bazar under Singichhara ADC village over the distribution of Areca nut saplings on Wednesday.

In the clash, at least 15 persons of both the sides were injured, among them three wounded persons were referred to Khowai District Hospital with serious injuries.

Areca Nut saplings were supposed to be distributed among the beneficiaries some days ago – however, as both the IPFT and Motha supporters turned up with two different lists of names, the distribution was stalled on an earlier occasion. Today, a meeting was convened to find out an amicable solution and resume the distribution.

However, after some discussions and altercations, the situation became vitiated and both the party supporters attacked each other with sticks, machetes and other such weapons. It was alleged, both the IPFT and Motha brought their supporters from other areas and a violent clash ensued.

In the clash, at least 15 persons were wounded. However Priyajit Debbarma and Suran Debbarma of Motha and Ratna Debbarma of IPFT were referred to the Khowai District Hospital.

Large posse of Police personnel from Khowai PS rushed to the area and brought the situation under control. According to sources, simmering tension is palpable and a temporary Police picket was set up along with patrolling by CRPF and TSR jawans to thwart any untoward incidents.

Meanwhile, local people vented frustration and anger at the unabated clashes between IPFT and Motha supporters.

“Developmental works remain stalled due to the relentless confrontation between the two party supporters. We the common people are suffering the most”, locals alleged.
