Tripura Legislative Assembly Speaker Ratan Chakraborty on Wednesday once again granted more than two months of time to IPFT MLA Brishaketu Debbarma who did turn up for an official hearing before the speaker till date.

Debbarma tendered his resignation through a letter and joined Pradyot Kishore Debbarman led TIPRA motha. Despite repeated summons, the MLA did not cooperate in the proceedings drawn against his petition of resignation, Speaker Ratan Chakraborty told media persons.

The MLA also did not exercise his voting rights in the Rajya Sabha elections violating the party whip. Newly elected IPFT president Mevar Kumar Jamatia brought the matter into the notice of the Speaker and urged him to initiate proceedings under anti-defection law.

“Neither the MLA nor the members of his party turn up for the proceedings. As per the law there are two possibilities: either the Debbarma will be disqualified from his post as per the provisions of anti-defection law or his resignation will be accepted. The matter is under consideration and after thorough analysis, an order will be passed from my office”, the Speaker said.

However, later in the evening, the Speaker granted another two months of time till June 16. “On June 16 next, he has to physically appear before the Speaker for the proceedings”, he added.

It is also to be mentioned here that after submitting his resignation, Debbarma did not participate in any of the assembly sessions held in the intervening period and kept distance from all sorts of government facilities.
