Twenty-eight Indian fishermen from Tamil Nadu’s Tirunelveli district have returned home following successful diplomatic efforts that led to their early release from detention in Bahrain. The fishermen, who were arrested in September 2024 for allegedly entering Bahraini territorial waters illegally, had their six-month sentence reduced to three months following a swift legal appeal.

The Indian Embassy in Bahrain played a crucial role by immediately appointing legal representation for the fishermen. Initially sentenced on October 9th along with two Iranian nationals, the embassy’s legal team filed an appeal the following day. The appeal proved successful when the Bahraini court reduced their sentences on October 31st.

Throughout their detention, the embassy provided comprehensive support, including consular assistance and basic necessities, while facilitating communication between the fishermen and their families. The repatriation was funded through the Government of India’s Indian Community Welfare Fund.

During his recent visit to Bahrain from December 7-9, the community leaders thanked External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar for the proactive approach taken by both the Ministry of External Affairs and the Indian Embassy in securing the fishermen’s early release.

Indian Ambassador to Bahrain, Mr. Vinod K. Jacob, expressed gratitude to Bahrain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other authorities for their cooperation in providing consular access and assistance throughout the process. The incident highlights the Indian government’s commitment to protecting its citizens abroad and maintaining strong diplomatic relations with Bahrain.
