Army Day is being celebrated today to honour the armed forces and their immense sacrifices for the country. It is a day to celebrate Indian soldiers’ courage, commitment, and service to the motherland.

Army Day is celebrated on this day to commemorate General (later Field Marshal) KM Cariappa taking over the command of the Indian Army from the last British Commander-in-Chief in 1949 and becoming the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of Independent India.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah greeted the Army personnel and their family members on the occasion. In a social media post, he said, soldiers have earned the Indian Army a place among the best armies in the world with their indomitable valour and courage. He added that Indian soldiers have kept the country’s security and honour supreme even in adverse circumstances with their dedication and sacrifice. He also paid a salute to the Martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the nation.
