The Unakoti District Court in Kailashahar has sentenced 35-year-old Ramiz Ali to life imprisonment for the brutal murder of his wife, Rosna Begum. The incident, which occurred on January 6, 2020, shocked the community and led to a protracted legal battle.

According to Public Prosecutor Sunirmal Deb, Ramiz Ali, a resident of Khowrabil village, married 27-year-old Rosna Begum of Dhaliyakandi village in May 2019. From the outset, Rosna was subjected to physical and mental abuse over dowry demands. The abuse escalated, and on the night of January 6, 2020, Ramiz attacked Rosna with a sharp spade, killing her instantly.

The next day, Ramiz informed Rosna’s mother, Neshrun Bibi, who discovered her daughter’s bloodied body at Ramiz’s home. She immediately reported the incident to the Irani Police Station. Ramiz initially fled but was apprehended three days later by Investigating Officer Aparna Debnath.

The police filed a charge sheet on May 31, 2020. During the trial, 22 witnesses testified against Ramiz, leading to his conviction by Judge Sudipta Chowdhury on Saturday. The court sentenced Ramiz to life imprisonment under IPC Section 302, along with a fine of Rs. 50,000. Failure to pay the fine would result in an additional nine months of imprisonment.

This verdict marks a significant step toward justice for victims of domestic violence and sends a strong message that such heinous acts will not go unpunished. The case has highlighted the importance of addressing domestic violence and ensuring that perpetrators are held accountable for their actions.

The community has expressed relief and satisfaction with the court’s decision, hoping that it will serve as a deterrent to others who may consider committing similar acts of violence. The case has also brought attention to the need for greater support and protection for victims of domestic abuse, as well as the importance of raising awareness about the issue.
