Gandacherra is reeling under serious tension following death of a youth that led to a violent outbreak on Friday. Violence erupted and the subdivision was thrown into chaos and panic after the report of the death reached.

Several houses were vandalized and set aflame by enraged mob even as security arrangements were put in place and reinforceent was made.  In the meantime, many families fled to forest to escape the murderously violent mob.

Reports reaching here said the deceased, Parameswar Reang, had got involved in an altercation during the Ananda Mela festival on July 7, which escalated soon and resulted in a fatal injury of the youth. It was reported that during the conflict, he was chased by a group of people. It was not clear as to how he was injured, as some said he fell and got himself injured while fleeing  and some alleged he was beaten mercilessly. He was rushed to hospital immediately after the incident. But Reang succumbed to his injuries on Friday morning. The news of his death quickly spread through like wild fire in his native village, sparking outrage and violent reactions from the community. As his body arrived in Gandacherra, the situation deteriorated further and , rapidly.

Enraged individuals vandalized and set fire to several houses and shops in the 33 KB area, 30 card area, and Tislighat. There were also incidents of physical attacks on people and clashes with the police, who struggled to maintain order.

Despite being aware of the potential for unrest, the police were criticized for inadequate security measures before Reang’s body reached his village.

With tensions running high, many families fled their homes, seeking refuge in nearby jungles to escape the violence. The situation remains volatile, and there are fears of further confrontations. Police have yet to provide an official statement on the events.

In a call for peace, Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarma appealed to the community to remain calm, assuring that justice would be served for the victim’s family. However, the atmosphere in Gandacherra remains tense as the last report came.
