A parked goods vehicle erupted in flames in Colonel Chowmani, the heart of the city, on Saturday, leading to extensive damage and a severe financial blow to a nearby cake shop. Reports suggest that the fire started in the empty vehicle, which was stationed by the roadside, and quickly spread to the adjacent shop. Fire Brigade personnel responded promptly, managing to bring the flames under control. Despite their efforts, the cake shop was reduced to ashes, resulting in a substantial loss.
Dipak Chakraborty, son of the shop owner, reported damages estimated at approximately Rs 2.5 lakh. “The firefighters acted swiftly, limiting further damage, but the economic impact on our business is devastating,” he shared.
Local residents expressed frustration, blaming the traffic department’s inaction against illegal roadside parking, which they say has led to overcrowded and dangerous conditions along city streets.
