Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the G-20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, emphasizing the plight of the Global South. He highlighted the adverse effects of global conflicts on food, fuel, and fertilizer supplies, urging the G-20 to prioritize these nations’ challenges.

Addressing the session on Social Inclusion and the Fight Against Hunger and Poverty, Mr. Modi underscored the disproportionate impact of global conflicts on the Global South.

Prime Minister Modi also complimented Brazil for advancing the “people-centric decisions” made during India’s G-20 presidency. He reaffirmed the enduring relevance of India’s G-20 theme, “One Earth, One Family, One Future,” and called for inclusive global governance reforms.

The summit saw the launch of a global alliance to combat poverty and hunger, supported by 80 nations. In a social media post, the Prime Minister described the initiative as “commendable,” affirming India’s full support for food security and social upliftment efforts.

Highlighting India’s domestic achievements, Mr. Modi stated that over 250 million people were lifted out of poverty in the past decade. The country is providing free food grains to 800 million citizens and has implemented the world’s largest health insurance scheme, covering 550 million individuals.

Mr. Modi also shared India’s contributions to global food security, including aid to Africa and other regions. He highlighted how digital public infrastructure and aspirational development programs are fostering inclusive growth in India.

The Prime Minister concluded by reiterating the need for reforms in global governance to amplify the voices of the Global South, just as India championed the African Union’s inclusion in the G-20 during its presidency.
