In Sikkim, the evacuation process at Lachen and Chaten is yet to start due to inclement weather. The IAF helicopter couldn’t operate due to bad weather. But official sources said that IAF choppers and NDRF teams are trying all possible options to evacuate the stranded passengers in the Mangan district. Yesterday, 34 people were rescued safely by the IAF and NDRF teams. The District Collector ofMangan, Anant Jain, said that there are around 130 tourists still stranded at Lachen. He said that they are all safe and staying in their hotels. He said that mobile communication has been disrupted at Lachen, but communication is on through NDRF’s satellite phones.
The tourism department has issued an advisory for tourists that the roads leading to Lachen and Lachung are temporarily closed due to landslides, but there is no problem in visiting other places in Sikkim. Governor Om Prakash Mathur visited Singhtam in Gangtok district yesterday to monitor the situation. Governor urged the local people to remain vigilant and also instructed the administration to provide all support to them.
