Electric eco-friendly crematorium inaugurated in Kailashahar by Minister Tinku Roy, fulfilling a long-standing civic demand. Built at a cost of Rs 1.5 crore, the facility promotes sustainable, hygienic, and dignified cremation practices for residents.

A long-awaited electric eco-friendly crematorium was formally inaugurated on Friday at Ward No. 17 under the Kailashahar Municipal Council, marking a significant milestone in the town’s urban infrastructure and environmental management efforts. The modern facility is expected to provide a dignified, hygienic, and environmentally sustainable alternative to traditional cremation practices.

The crematorium was inaugurated by Minister Tinku Roy in the presence of several senior officials, elected representatives, and prominent members of civil society. The inauguration ceremony was attended by Kailashahar Municipal Council Chairperson Chapala Rani Debroy, Sub-Divisional Magistrate Bipul Das, Unakoti Zilla Sabhadhipati Amalendu Das, Zilla Parishad member Bimal Kar, noted social worker Rathindra Choudhury, Deputy Executive Officer of the Municipal Council Hemanta Dhar, along with councillors, municipal officials, and local residents.

Councillor of Ward No. 17, Sikkim Sinha, delivered the welcome address and highlighted the importance of the project for the local community. He stated that the establishment of the electric crematorium would greatly reduce environmental pollution while also easing the burden on grieving families by providing a more efficient and organized facility.

Addressing the gathering, Municipal Council Chairperson Chapala Rani Debroy said that approximately Rs 1.5 crore had been spent on the construction of the electric eco-friendly crematorium. She alleged that the project faced repeated conspiracies and obstacles aimed at preventing its completion in Ward No. 17. According to her, crucial documents and the entire project file were stolen from the municipal council office at one point, and construction materials were stolen multiple times during the building phase.

Despite these setbacks, Debroy said the project was successfully completed due to her persistent efforts and the collective support of the municipal administration. She emphasized that the crematorium reflects the council’s commitment to sustainable development and improved civic services.

For many years, various social organizations, community groups, and political representatives in the Kailashahar Municipal Council area had been demanding the installation of an electric eco-friendly crematorium. The absence of such a facility had caused inconvenience to residents, particularly during times of bereavement. With the inauguration of the crematorium, a long-cherished demand of the people has finally been fulfilled.

Speaking at the event, Minister Tinku Roy said the new facility would benefit residents across Kailashahar by providing a cleaner and more efficient cremation system. However, he stressed the need for additional infrastructure, including the construction of a boundary wall around the crematorium premises and the installation of sheds with seating arrangements to ensure comfort for visitors and grieving families.
