Tripura CM Dr. Saha warns of strict action against drug traffickers, including prominent individuals, at a Drug-Free India Campaign event. He also urges public awareness to prevent child marriage and announces possible legal reforms mandating marriage registration. Government intensifies crackdown on drugs under zero-tolerance policy.
In a powerful and uncompromising speech today, Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha sounded a clarion call against the growing menace of drug trafficking in the state, stating unequivocally that many prominent individuals in society are involved in the drug trade for financial gain. Speaking at a public awareness programme organized under the Drug-Free India Campaign and focused on preventing child marriage, Dr. Saha emphasized that no one involved in these crimes—regardless of their social status—will be spared if caught in the web of law.
The programme was held at the Gandhigram Higher Secondary School grounds in the Bamutia block of West Tripura District and saw the presence of numerous dignitaries and government officials.
Zero Tolerance Against Drug Offenders
“People involved in the drug trade will not be spared under any circumstances,” the Chief Minister declared, reiterating the government’s zero-tolerance policy against drugs. He further warned, “Those who fall into the trap of law—no matter how prominent they are—cannot be saved.”
Dr. Saha, who also holds the Home Minister portfolio of Tripura, noted that despite the state’s earlier reputation as a relatively addiction-free region, the last four decades have seen a dramatic rise in substance abuse. “This is a serious issue that has emerged over 40 years. It is now affecting every section of society,” he said.

He credited the present Central Government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, for prioritizing anti-drug efforts and implementing strict measures. “Union Home Minister Amit Shah has been giving continuous attention to this problem. The Centre is monitoring it very closely, and the state government is acting accordingly,” said Dr. Saha.
He highlighted that the police and other enforcement agencies are actively engaged in operations against drug traffickers. “Large quantities of narcotics are being seized, and arrests have significantly increased. Many offenders are being prosecuted under the NDPS Act and receiving appropriate punishment,” he added.
Prominent People Also Under the Scanner
A striking part of the Chief Minister’s address was his revelation that several influential people in society are directly involved in drug-related activities. “These individuals enjoy free movement in various circles. But once they are caught, the law will take its own course, and there will be no protection for them,” he warned.
He instructed law enforcement agencies not to provide leniency to anyone involved in such destructive activities. “They are not just ruining their own lives, but are also a threat to the future of the state and society at large,” Dr. Saha said.
Focus on Child Marriage and Public Health
In addition to addressing drug-related concerns, the Chief Minister also spoke firmly against child marriage. “Everyone must come forward to stop this social evil. It is still prevalent in some areas and has lifelong consequences for young girls and boys,” he said.
Dr. Saha lauded a girl from the minority community in the state who received national recognition from the President of India for resisting a child marriage attempt. “She should serve as an inspiration to others,” he remarked.
The state government is considering legal reforms, including mandatory registration of marriages before conducting any social ceremony. “We are planning to make registered marriage compulsory before traditional rituals. The legal age—18 for girls and 21 for boys—must be enforced. Birth certificates will be mandatory for this,” he added.
Raising Awareness About Public Health Issues
The Chief Minister also called for greater awareness about pressing health issues such as thalassemia, tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS. “Public awareness is key to both prevention and effective management,” he said.
