Dr Manik Saha, the newly elected Tripura Legislative Party leader has sworn-in on Sunday as the 12th Chief Minister of Tripura. Governor Satyadeo Narain Arya has administered the oath to the newly Chief Minister at Raj Bhawan in a hurriedly called programme where ruling BJP and IPFT MLAs and officials from bureaucracy, police, CAPFs etc have been present. The opposition parties, however, have boycotted the swearing in ceremony alleging attacks on them by the ruling party workers.
The new cabinet has not been finalized as yet even though series of meetings are being held. Sources indicate that Dr Saha is likely to keep the previous cabinet as it is with slight changes in the portfolios. However, the meetings are still going on with senior party leaders and representatives from Delhi in attendance. The ruling partner IPFT may change one minister from its fold.
Dr Saha, who is a maxillofacial surgeon and professor of Tripura Medical College also holds several other positions, apart from being a Rajya Sabha member. He is also the BJP state unit president and Tripura Cricket Association president.
He was selected as new legislative party leader in a meeting on Saturday soon after incumbent Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb resigned from the position.
Dr Saha’s election was not smooth as some of the party MLAs openly resented and reacted at his selection. MLA Ram Prasad Paul was particularly vocal against his election to the legislative party chief. But on Sunday he also attended the swearing in ceremony.
After taking oath Dr Saha has said that he will work for all round development of the state in the line of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Sabka Saath Sabka Bikash. He will start working from Monday itself as the Chief Minister.
Former Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb has said that he will extend all support and cooperation to the new Chief Minister and will carry out whatever responsibilities – political, organizational or otherwise –that will eb bestowed upon him.
In the maentime Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Dr Saha in his tweet : Congratulations to Shri @DrManikSaha2 on taking oath as Tripura’s CM. Best wishes to him for a fruitful tenure. I am confident he will add vigour to the development journey of Tripura which began in 2018.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also in a tweet congratulated Dr Saha for being the new Chief Minister of Tripura.
