Agartala Municipal Corporation has got its new Mayor – Dipak Majumdar alias Alik Majumdar on Wednesday. The New Mayor and other elected AMC members were sworn in in a jam packed programme where Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, Deputy Chief Minister Jishnu Dev Varma, Speaker Ratan Chakrabarty, former Mayor Dr Prafullajit Sinha BJP president Dr Manik Saha, were present. The oath was administered by Secretary Kiran Gitte.
It is learnt that all the MLAs whose constituencies fell in the AMC areas were contacted by the party top echelon and all the MLAs favoured him as the next Mayor.
Dipak Majumdar , the incumbent TRTC chairman had always been the front runner for the coveted position as several factors were in his favour. Majumdar had experience in running the city affairs as he had once been the Chairman of the Council. Known as honest and soft spoken Majumdar remained close the people and always extended his helping hand. He is respected by all irrespective of political affiliations.
Deputy Mayor position went to Manika Das Datta while Jagadish Das, Sampa Sen Sarkar, Hiralal debnath, Himani debbarma, Tushar kanti Bhattacharjee, Bapi Dsa, Uday Bhaskar Chowdhury and Harisadhan Debnath were made Mayor in Council.
