In Bangladesh, a group of Dhaka University (DU) students staged a protest on the campus demanding the immediate resignation of Home Advisor Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, citing a surge in crimes across the country. The students issued an ultimatum for the Adviser to resign within Monday for failing to tackle the spiralling deterioration of the country’s law-and-order situation.

The protest began at 1:30 am on Monday on the university campus, shortly after a gold trader was shot in the capital Dhaka’s Banasree area by unidentified men.

The students, hailing from various halls, first assembled at Hallpara and later marched toward the Raju Sculpture, chanting slogans such as “Dofa ek, dabi ek, Jahangir er podottog” (One demand, one goal – Jahangir must resign) and “Amar bhai rastay more, proshason ki kore?” (My brother was killed on the streets – what is the administration doing?).

They expressed frustration over the rising incidents of killings, robberies, and rapes across the country, accusing the Home Advisor of failing to ensure public safety, reports United News of Bangladesh (UNB).

“Extortionists have risen again in the country. That means the home affairs advisor is unable to take effective action. You have given magisterial powers to the army. What role is the army playing?”, Business Standard newspaper quotes Shakib Ahmed, one of the protesting students.

“Today, we want to announce from Raju Memorial Sculpture that if the home affairs adviser does not resign by 1:00 pm on Monday, we will take action at the field level. They will have to give an account of what each of them has done in the past six months,” Shakib Ahmed added.

Another student, Nurul Gani Chagir said, “We want to say clearly – if you cannot solve the problem with your police, army, or RAB, then leave the responsibility to university students. We will not allow a single kidnapping or rape to happen in the country from today onwards.”
