Khowai District and Sessions Judge on Wednesday sentenced Pradip Deb Roy (40) to death for committing murders of five people—four of his family members and one police officer -on November 26 last year.
The incident took place at Uttar Ramchandraghat under Khowai police station.
Pradip in a fit of rage killed his daughters Aditi, Mandira, elder brother Amalesh , Police sub inspector Satyajit Mallik and a bystander Krishna Das with a shovel. The Sub Inspector had gone to detain Pradip when he was attacked. Mallik died in hospital. Krishna Das was sitting with his son Karnadhir Das in an autorickshaw when Pradip attacked them. Both sustained grievous injuries and Krishna died in the hospital too.
According to a press release issued by the Tripura police, Pradip Deb Roy (40) of Uttar Ramchandraghat under Khowai police station was found guilty under sections 302 and 307 of IPC for killing five people including his daughters.
Sub-inspector- L. Darlong of Khowai Police Station and Rajib Sutradhar, Sub-Divisional Police Officer of Khowai investigated the case and submitted the charge sheet before the court.
The Police statement said : “The court convicted Pradip Deb Roy and sentenced him to rigorous imprisonment for 10 years along with a fine of Rs. 10,000 for the commission of an offence punishable under section 307 of IPC and sentenced Pradip to death under 302 of IPC subject to confirmation by the High Court of Tripura”, the Press release mentioned.
The convict is also liable to pay compensation of Rs. 5,000 each to the victims- Mina Paul (Deb Roy), the wife of the convict and Karnavir Das.
Pradip Deb Roy killed his daughters in his living room at midnight with the iron rod. After that, he killed his elder brother- Amalesh Deb Roy.
Later, when policemen including officers of Khowai police station arrived on the scene after receiving this information, the convict assaulted the on-duty officer, Inspector- Satyajit Mallik, with the iron rod. Mallik received grievous injuries on the head and he also damaged the police vehicle there.
Thereafter, the convict also assaulted one Krishna Das (45) and his son Karnadhir Das, who were going from Ramchandraghat to Laltilla by an autorickshaw. Both Krishna Das and his son sustained severe injuries in the attack.
Both the injured persons were taken to the Khowai District Hospital where Krishna Das succumbed to his injuries during treatment at the hospital. Satyajit Mallik succumbed to his injury at GBP Hospital during treatment.
