For the first-time after 2018 the opposition CPI-M held an impressive rally here on Thursday as part of its 23rd state conference scheduled to begin this evening for three days.

CPI-M general secretary Sitaram Yechuri, CPI-M politburo members Prakash Karat and Manik Sarkar called upon the people to come out on the street and raise resistance against the ‘fascist attack’ on non-BJP supporters and ensure to reinstall Left Front government in Tripura in next year’s election.

Addressing the gathering at Agartala Swami Vivekananda Ground on Thursday Prakash Karat alleged that democratic institutions in the country had become dysfunctional under Prime Minister Narenda Modi’s rule and people of India lost their fundamental right to speak and express their independent opinion.

“The BJP is doing politics for spreading hatred, communal violence and creating social divide on religious lines. The economy of the country has broken down and after completion of the ensuing elections to five states the price of essential commodities will fly beyond control,” Karat stated.

CPI-M general secretary Sitaram Yechuri said that the country was in the process of a slide; the manufacturing, agriculture and service sectors had been affected because of the faulty economic policies of the government.

Former Chief Minister of the then Left front government in Tripura – Manik Sarkar said, “The Constitution is not working in the state of Tripura as the BJP led government is throttling the voice of democracy and people of all walks of life has lost their democratic rights under the BJP rule.”

Sarkar urged the people to come together to prevent the BJP who had looted votes in the last four elections in the state and said, “The people of the state have been facing atrocities of ruling BJP in Tripura since 2018 every day and from now onwards we should get united and raise barricade against any of such attempt. BJP should be given reply in their own coins.”

CPM state unit Secretary Jitendra Choudhury also dwelt on the party’s stand and exhorted people to come forward against the BJP and prepare to vote for the Left Front in the next assembly elections.

The CPM rally in the city was by and large impressive one. However, absence of tribal people in the rally – the Marxists’ once a strong base- was glaring in the rally.
