CPI-M MLA and state secretary Jiten Choudhury assumed the role of Leader of Opposition in the Tripura Legislative Assembly on Wednesday. With the merger of TIPRA Motha with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as an alliance partner, the CPI-M, boasting a total of 10 MLAs in the assembly, reclaimed its position as the primary opposition political party in the state.

The swearing-in ceremony, presided over by Speaker Biswa Bandhu Sen, marked Choudhury’s formal induction into the crucial role.

“The position was vacant since Animesh Debbarma, an MLA from the TIPRA Motha party, resigned from the role and took oath as a cabinet minister in Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha’s cabinet on March 7. With TIPRA Moth being an ally to the BJP, the opposition CPIM has the maximum number of MLAs out of the 60-member Tripura Legislative Assembly. And therefore, Jiten Choudhury has taken an oath as the Leader of Opposition today,”  said Sen.

The position had remained vacant since Animesh Debbarma, MLA from TIPRA Motha, resigned to assume a cabinet ministerial role in Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha’s administration on March 7. With TIPRA Motha aligning with the BJP, the CPI-M emerged as the largest opposition bloc in the 60-member Tripura Legislative Assembly.

Addressing reporters following the oath-taking ceremony, Choudhury added, “I will back the ruling government in all its good works and oppose its drawbacks. I will raise matters of public importance and extend my cooperation to the Speaker in conducting the business of the House.”.
