Coco Gauff began her French Open title defence with a commanding straight-sets victory over Taylor Townsend at Roland Garros. The reigning champion dominated the second set and advanced to the second round, where she will face Egypt’s Mayar Sherif in Paris.
Defending champion Coco Gauff made a powerful start to her French Open campaign after defeating fellow American Taylor Townsend in straight sets during the opening round at French Open on Tuesday.
Playing on the iconic Court Philippe-Chatrier at Stade Roland Garros, Gauff produced a dominant display to secure a 6-4, 6-0 victory in just one hour and twenty minutes. The world number four successfully extended her impressive streak of reaching the second round in all seven of her appearances at the Paris Grand Slam.
Although the final scoreline appeared one-sided, the contest began with a surprising challenge from Townsend. The experienced American broke Gauff’s serve in the opening game and looked aggressive from the baseline during the early exchanges. Townsend’s attacking approach placed the defending champion under immediate pressure, and she came close to establishing a commanding 4-1 lead with a potential double-break advantage.
However, the momentum of the match shifted dramatically after Townsend failed to convert a crucial break-point opportunity. Gauff, despite struggling briefly with her first serve, managed to hold her nerve and regain control of the match. From that point onward, the reigning champion displayed the consistency and composure that helped her capture the title last year.
Gauff responded with relentless intensity, winning 11 of the final 12 games of the match. Her movement around the court, powerful groundstrokes, and defensive resilience left Townsend with very few opportunities to recover. The second set became completely one-sided as Gauff raised her level even further while Townsend’s game began to unravel under sustained pressure.
The defending champion broke early in the second set and never allowed her opponent back into the contest. Townsend missed another key opportunity to narrow the gap after sending a routine backhand wide on break point. The missed chance visibly frustrated the American, while Gauff immediately capitalised by extending her advantage and tightening her grip on the match.
At just 22 years old, Gauff once again demonstrated why she is considered one of the strongest contenders for the women’s title in Paris this year. Her confidence, tactical maturity, and physical dominance were evident throughout the encounter, particularly during the flawless second set in which she did not concede a single game.

The victory also carried added significance for Gauff, who had previously lost to Townsend as a 15-year-old during a meeting in Charleston back in 2019. This latest performance highlighted her remarkable growth and evolution into one of the leading figures in women’s tennis.
Gauff will now continue her title defence against Mayar Sherif in the second round as she seeks to retain the prestigious French Open crown in Paris.
