Tension ran high after a clash erupted between Reang refugees and locals near Casco camp in Damcherra of North Tripura district on Sunday.
Superintendent of Police, North- Bhanupada Chakraborty, who went to the spot soon after the incident, said that 13 persons were injured in the clash and multiple houses were set afire.
He said the situation was tense but well under control.
To avoid any untoward incident, the North District police chief along with a large contingent of policemen was camping at the spot till the last information came in.
According to local sources, some of the reang refugees had set up road-side shops near the camp. But, the locals—mostly from Charai and Halam communities– had raised objection which then led to the clash.
Our Dharmanagar correspondent adds: As per the quadripartite pact signed by the Ministry of Home Affairs with the State governments of Tripura, Mizoram and leaders of Bru community, the Bru refugees of Casco camp were given rehabilitation at the same place.
But the people of Narendra Nagar in Damcherra were using a portion of the same ‘Khas’ land for cultivation. Now, they are also not willing to leave the land.
On July 19 last, local resident Shanti Kumar Tripura had lodged a complaint with the Damcherra police station alleging that some plants in his farming area were damaged by the miscreants on July 17 night last. The situation that was boiling since the incident had taken an ugly shape on Monday.
SDM Panisagar and BDO Damcherra had visited the spot but failed to bring the situation under control. Finally, SP North reached the spot with a large contingent of police and brought the situation under control with several rounds of blank fire.
