If everything goes as planned the elections to all civic bodies including Agartala Municipal Corporation will be announced on Friday.
Elections to 20 urban local bodies comprise of one Agartala municipal corporation, 13 municipal council and six Nagar panchayats were postponed last year due to Covid pandemic situation. Since then they were being run by administrators. However, as the situation has improved the state government decided to go ahead with the polls. Official sources indicated that a government notification in this regard would be issued on Friday.
In the meantime, while BJP already geared up for the civic bodies polls with sustained campaigns spearheaded by Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb , the opposition appeared either not all ready or lagging behind. The main opposition CPM had lost two of its top strategists within one month Bijan Dhar and Gautam Das, and Forward Bloc its secretary Shyamal Roy and the party seemed still not yet prepared to put up a decisive fight in the civic polls. On the other hand the Congress was still dogged by its traditional internecine infights and leadership squabble. Trinamool Congress though started with a bang while making foray into Tripura politics at present maintaining low key due to dearth of leadership.
However political observers said, the opposition would try hard to unite and consolidate their bases before the civic bodies elections as it would appear as the run up of the coming assembly elections. If the opposition failed to give a fight in the AMC and other Civic bodies elections across the state, it would difficult for them to keep their support base intact- an erosion would further commence.
