A quiet agricultural landscape in Charilam has witnessed an unexpected transformation, as fields once known only for routine farming have turned into a thriving tourist destination. The change has been driven by a sprawling sunflower orchard that is drawing crowds from across the region, redefining how rural spaces can evolve through innovation and visibility.
The vibrant yellow fields, now in full bloom, have become a visual spectacle, attracting visitors from nearby areas such as Jirania and Mohanpur. Travelers are making long journeys just to experience the picturesque scenery and capture moments among the towering sunflowers. Social media has played a crucial role in this surge, with photos and short videos from the site rapidly gaining popularity and encouraging more people to visit.
At the center of this transformation is local farmer Sanjib Das, whose decision to cultivate sunflowers has brought him both recognition and financial opportunity. What began as an experimental crop has turned into a profitable venture, as hundreds of visitors arrive daily. To manage the influx, Das has introduced a nominal entry fee of Rs 10 per visitor, while individual sunflower stems are being sold for Rs 100 each.
The overwhelming turnout has also required administrative intervention. Local authorities have deployed police personnel to maintain order, regulate crowds, and ensure the safety of both visitors and the crops. The fields, once quiet and undisturbed, now resemble a lively fairground, particularly during peak hours when families, tourists, and content creators gather in large numbers.
The success of this initiative has inspired others in the community. Another farmer, Chittaranjan Majumder, has followed suit by planting sunflowers in a nearby field. His orchard has also gained traction, adding to the area’s growing appeal as a rural tourism hub. Together, these farms have created a cluster of attractions that continue to draw attention both offline and online.
Visitors to the sunflower fields are seen engaging in various leisure activities, from casual walks through the blooming rows to filming video blogs and photography sessions. The natural setting, combined with the vibrant colors, offers an ideal backdrop for digital content, further amplifying the location’s popularity across platforms.
According to Das, the journey began after agricultural experts from the Krishi Vigyan Kendra recommended sunflower cultivation. Within just two and a half months, the plants matured into a flourishing crop. The farmer expressed satisfaction with the outcome, noting that the response has exceeded all expectations.

Local volunteers have supported the initiative by explaining the rationale behind the entry fee, emphasizing that it helps offset potential damage caused by heavy footfall.
