The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Kolkata Police today filed status reports before the Supreme Court in the case of the alleged rape and murder of a resident doctor in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The Apex Court’s bench, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) D.Y. Chandrachud and comprising Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, resumed hearing in the suo motu case registered by it in the matter.

At the outset of the proceedings, CJI urged the agitating doctors to return to work, asserting that the ongoing protests could s everely impact the public healthcare system.

Various associations and bodies of medical professionals have filed intervention applications before the apex court seeking directions in the matter. The incident has sparked nationwide outrage and protests with doctors in several parts of the country, demanding stricter laws to ensure the safety of medical professionals.

The matter is currently being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation after the Calcutta High Court transferred the probe to the central agency.
During the previous hearing of the matter, the top court issued several directives, including the establishment of a national task force to examine the issues concerning the safety of doctors and medical professionals and to address gender-based violence.
