On Saturday, Border Security Force (BSF) personnel opened fire and injured four individuals, including a woman and a child, when a group of Bangladeshis attempted to make an illegal entry into Indian territory in Boxanagar, Sepahijala district. The incident occurred as the group was reportedly attempting to smuggle contraband items across the India-Bangladesh border fence.

According to available reports, the BSF personnel on duty observed a large group of individuals, including women and children, carrying sharp-edged weapons and attempting to smuggle contraband items. When challenged by the BSF, the group of smugglers, armed with ‘dao’ (a type of machete), turned aggressive and attempted to encircle the border guard personnel on duty.

In response, the BSF personnel fired one round from a Pump Action Gun (PAG). As a result, two smugglers sustained minor pellet injuries, while a woman and a child, who were standing nearby, also sustained minor injuries.

The BSF troops claimed to have seized a significant quantity of Eskuf Syrup and a large number of rice bags from the spot2. The incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by the BSF in preventing cross-border smuggling and ensuring the security of the India-Bangladesh border.
