After successfully facilitating kidney transplants and other medical advancements, Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and GBP Hospital have reached a new milestone by achieving the first artificial conception through the Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) procedure. This significant achievement was accomplished by specialists from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

AGMC and GBP Hospital have now become the second institution in the north-eastern region, following Guwahati Medical College, to achieve this medical feat. According to a government press release, a 32-year-old woman who had been battling infertility for 14 years benefited from this advanced medical procedure.

The patient’s treatment journey began under the supervision of Assistant Professor Dr. Abhijit Shil from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at AGMC in 2023. After thorough examinations, Dr. Shil diagnosed a blockage in the patient’s fallopian tubes as the cause of her infertility and recommended surgical intervention.

On October 5, 2023, the woman underwent a hysteroscopic tubal cannulation procedure at AGMC and GBP Hospital. The surgical team comprised Dr. Abhijit Shil, Associate Professor Dr. Salil Bindu Chakraborty, and Assistant Professor Dr. Suparna Sutradhar. The surgery was successful, and the patient was advised to pursue advanced infertility treatment at the same facility.

On April 8, 2024, Dr. Shil and his team initiated the Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) procedure, where prepared sperm were directly inserted into the uterus to facilitate fertilization. This method resulted in a successful pregnancy, marking a historic first for infertility treatment in the state and bringing hope to many couples struggling with infertility.

The woman regularly attended prenatal check-ups at AGMC, and on January 9, 2025, she delivered a healthy baby weighing 3 kilograms via C-section. Both mother and child are in good health.

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at AGMC and GBP Hospital, led by Prof. Dr. Jayanta Ray and Prof. Dr. Jahar Lal Baidya, initiated the IUI services two years ago to provide advanced infertility treatments within the state. Their efforts have now borne fruit, making a significant impact on infertility treatment in the region.
