Leaders of four bodies of Bru displaced people held Chorei community people responsible for July 26 violence at Damchhara in North Tripura. Bru leaders also alleged that some Chorei people from Assam had constructed huts near Kaskaopara Bru relief camp in Damchhara.

Addressing a press conference in Agartala on Friday, leaders of four organizations of displaced Bru Reangs including general secretary of Mizoram  Bru Displaced Peoples’ Forum (MBDPF) Bruno Msha said, “A series of attacks have been perpetrated towards the innocent Bru Reangs of Kaskaopara relief camp by the Chorei community recently”. Msha and others also mentioned four such incidents in which Brus came under attack. The leaders also claimed that seven people were critically injured in such attacks.

Further they alleged, “Few Chorei families mostly from Assam started doing gardening and constructing small huts in and around Kaskaopara relief camp on the roadside from Damcherra to Gourango Para just after signing of the Quadrilateral Agreement on the permanent settlement of Bru people in Tripura at New Delhi on January 16, 2020”.

They also said, “The incident was not a communal as per our perception as there are many Choral families living peacefully at Damcherra, Khawdungsei, Nilbason, etc. which are closed to Kaskaopara relief camp”.

Besides, the leaders also highlighted the ongoing Bru rehabilitation process and said, “Rehabilitation processes have been carrying out at 4 locations in two districts of Dhalai and North Tripura out of 11 locations in the State.

Out of the four, two locations are Kaskaopara and Khahamthaipara located under Panisagar Sub-Division and two other locations are under Dhalai District of Haduklau Para and Bongophapara”.

In view of alleged attacks at Kaskaopara, Bru leaders demanded that Government must initiate actions against the Chorei people involved in the ‘attack’ and pay compensation to seven critically injured Bru people. They also made demands relating to rehabilitation of Brus and security arrangements around the relief camps.
