Fake gun robbery attempt foiled in Melaghar as brave local youths overpower one suspect inside a rubber plantation. Police detained the accused and launched a search operation for four absconding accomplices after the daylight incident triggered panic among residents.
A robbery attempt allegedly carried out using a fake pistol was foiled after a group of local youths courageously resisted the attackers and managed to overpower one of the suspects in the Taibandal-Chandiban area under Melaghar police station on Sunday.
The accused, identified as Rabindra Tripura, also known as Deb Kumar Tripura, is a resident of Taibandal Suknacherra in the Belbari area. Police said the pistol recovered from the accused during the investigation was later confirmed to be a fake toy gun.
According to reports, a group of youths from Mohanbhog and Chundal were returning home after visiting Chandiban Lake when they were allegedly intercepted inside a deserted rubber plantation by Rabindra Tripura and four of his associates. The suspects reportedly threatened the youths with a pistol and attempted to rob them.
Instead of surrendering out of fear, the youths confronted the alleged robbers, leading to a tense scuffle between both sides. During the chaos, four accomplices managed to escape from the spot, while the youths successfully caught Rabindra Tripura and restrained him until police arrived.
After receiving information about the incident, personnel from Melaghar police station rushed to the area and detained the accused. During a search operation at the scene, police recovered the fake pistol allegedly used during the attempted robbery.
Police have launched a manhunt to trace the four absconding suspects. Investigators are currently questioning the detained accused to gather further details regarding the involvement and identities of the fleeing accomplices.
The incident has created panic among residents of Taibandal and Chandiban, particularly because the robbery attempt reportedly took place in broad daylight. Local residents have demanded stronger security measures and increased police patrolling in isolated areas, including rubber plantations and roadside stretches frequently used by commuters and visitors.
