BJP appoints first-time MLA Abhishek Debroy as Tripura Pradesh president ahead of the 2028 Assembly polls. Party workers gave him a grand welcome in Agartala as leaders expressed confidence in his grassroots leadership and organisational vision to strengthen the BJP across the state.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday appointed Matabari MLA Abhishek Debroy as the new president of the Tripura Pradesh BJP, replacing Rajib Bhattacharjee in a significant organisational reshuffle ahead of the 2028 Assembly elections. The announcement, approved by BJP national leadership, has generated enthusiasm among party workers across the state, especially among the youth and grassroots karyakartas.
Debroy, who represents the Matabari Assembly constituency in Gomati district, is considered one of the emerging young faces of the party in Tripura politics. The 44-year-old first-time MLA has earned recognition within the organisation for maintaining close contact with party workers at the grassroots level and for his organisational capabilities developed over the years.
Following the official announcement, a large number of BJP supporters and karyakartas gathered at Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport in Agartala to welcome Debroy upon his return from Delhi. Party workers raised slogans and escorted him to the BJP state office in a celebratory procession. Ministers Pranajit Singha Roy, Sushanta Chowdhury and Kishor Barman, along with several senior leaders, were present to receive him at the airport.
Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha congratulated Debroy on social media and expressed confidence in his leadership. In his message, the Chief Minister said he believes the party will continue to grow stronger under Debroy’s dynamic leadership and organisational vision while working for the welfare of the people of Tripura.
Former Pradesh BJP president Rajib Bhattacharjee also extended his wishes to Debroy and praised the decision of the central leadership. Bhattacharjee stated that he was confident the organisation would become stronger under the new president’s leadership and continue serving the people with dedication and commitment.

Debroy’s political journey began through student activism and youth movements in 2001. Before joining the BJP in 2017, he was associated with the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) and later held several positions in the Youth Congress. Since joining the BJP, he has steadily climbed the organisational ladder, serving as mandal president, district president and later as president of the BJP’s Gomati district unit before entering the Assembly in 2023.
A graduate in pharmacy, Debroy has been actively involved in organisational activities and currently serves as a member of the BJP Tripura state committee. His elevation is being viewed as a strategic move by the BJP leadership to strengthen the party structure ahead of upcoming village committee elections, local body polls and the crucial 2028 Assembly elections.
Political observers believe the BJP’s decision to appoint a relatively young leader reflects the party’s attempt to energise its cadre base and maintain strong organisational momentum in Tripura. Party leaders and workers across social media welcomed the appointment and expressed hope that Debroy would expand the BJP’s reach further across the state.
The formal handover of charge from outgoing president Rajib Bhattacharjee to Abhishek Debroy is scheduled to take place on Friday during a party function in Agartala.
