The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today nominated Jay Dholakia, son of late Biju Janata Dal (BJD) MLA Rajendra Dholakia, as its candidate for the high-stakes Nuapada assembly by-election in Odisha to be held on the 11th of next month. The by-election marks the first major electoral test for the BJP government led by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi since it assumed power in Odisha.
The by-election has been necessitated following the death of sitting BJD MLA and former minister Rajendra Dholakia. Jay Dholakia is scheduled to file his nomination tomorrow in an extensive roadshow led by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, flanked by senior ministers, MPs, and MLAs. While the Congress has nominated Ghasiram Majhi as its candidate, the BJD is yet to declare its nominee.
