Tripura Police arrested three Bangladeshi nationals and two Indian accomplices in Kailashahar while illegally travelling to Chennai. The accused allegedly crossed the border without documents. Investigation is underway into possible illegal immigration networks.

In a operation highlighting ongoing concerns over illegal cross-border movement, police from Kailashahar Police Station arrested three Bangladeshi nationals and two Indian accomplices on Sunday while they were allegedly travelling illegally towards Chennai.

According to police sources, the arrests were made following a specific tip-off received by local intelligence units. Acting swiftly, a special surveillance team was deployed in plain clothes at the Paiturbazar New Motor Stand area, a location considered sensitive due to frequent interstate vehicle movement.

Officer-in-Charge of Kailashahar Police Station, Tapas Malakar, stated that the team observed a Maruti van carrying five individuals whose behaviour raised suspicion. The vehicle was moving towards Dharmanagar and was believed to be part of a longer journey to Chennai. Police intercepted the van and began questioning the occupants.

During preliminary questioning, the individuals reportedly gave evasive and inconsistent answers, prompting officers to conduct a detailed search and interrogation. Upon sustained questioning, three of the detainees admitted to being Bangladeshi citizens who had entered Indian territory without valid travel documents or legal permission.

The Bangladeshi nationals were identified as Arman Hossain, Imran Hossain, and Monir Hossain, all residents of the Comilla district in Bangladesh. Investigators revealed that the trio had crossed the international border illegally and were attempting to travel to Chennai, allegedly in search of employment.

Two Indian nationals, identified as Faruk Mia and Abdul Kayum from the Rangauti area, were also arrested for their alleged role in facilitating the illegal movement. Police said the accused Indians had arranged transportation and were escorting the Bangladeshi nationals during their journey.

Officials believe the case may be linked to a wider network involved in illegal immigration and human trafficking. Authorities are now probing possible links to organised rackets that assist undocumented migrants in travelling across states using road transport.

All five accused have been taken into custody, and legal proceedings under relevant sections of immigration and criminal laws are underway. Police are also verifying whether similar routes have been used earlier to transport undocumented foreign nationals to southern Indian cities.

Senior officials confirmed that further investigation is ongoing to identify additional facilitators, border crossing points, and financial transactions involved in the operation. Security agencies have reiterated the need for increased vigilance along border areas to curb illegal infiltration and protect national security.
