Bangladesh Prosecutor Seeks Death Penalty for Former PM Hasina Over July Movement Crimes

The Chief Prosecutor of Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has sought the death penalty for former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal in a case related to alleged crimes against humanity during the July Movement. Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam made the plea yesterday before the three-member ICT-1 bench, headed by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Majumder, after completing five days of law-point arguments on behalf of the prosecution.
According to reports from United News of Bangladesh (UNB), the Chief Prosecutor also requested the tribunal to decide on an appropriate sentence for former Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, who testified as a state witness in the case. 
The tribunal will announce the next date for the defence’s closing arguments in the coming days.
