In Badminton, PV Sindhu and Tanvi Sharma today advanced to the second round of Women’s Singles event at Australian Open tournament in Sydney. Two-time Olympic medallist Sindhu, 10th in the badminton rankings, defeated Peru’s world No. 76 Inés Castillo 21-13, 21-11 in the first-round clash of the tournament. Sindhu’s pre-quarterfinal match will be against compatriot and world No. 39 Isharani Baruah, who defeated People’s Republic of China’s Han Qianxi 22-20, 10-21, 21-14 in her opener. Tanvi Sharma, who won a silver at the BWF World Junior Championships last year, showed signs of returning to form with a 21-12, 22-20 win over world No. 11 Chiu Pin-Chian of Chinese Taipei. In the second round tomorrow, Tanvi will face Malvika Bansod, who beat Thailand’s Tonrug Saeheng 15-21, 21-7, 21-13.
Meanwhile, India’s challenge in the Men’s Singles ended in the first round following defeats for Kiran George, Saneeth Dayanand and Tharun Mannepalli.
Earlier, MR Arjun and Hariharan Amsakarunan cruised into the second round of Men’s Doubles event yesterday.
