In a prelude to the 53rd Vijay Diwas celebration, the Assam Rifles organised a Half Marathon in Agartala, Tripura, on Sunday. The event aimed to honour the sacrifices and valour of the Indian Armed Forces during the 1971 Indo-Pak war, which culminated in the creation of Bangladesh.
According to a defence spokesperson, the marathon witnessed participation from over 600 individuals representing various walks of life. The event was dedicated to fostering unity and integrity while remembering the unmatched courage displayed by India’s soldiers during the 1971 war.
Tripura Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Tinku Roy graced the occasion as the chief guest. Speaking at the event, the minister commended the Assam Rifles for their initiative in hosting such a significant event, which not only promotes patriotism but also encourages fitness and a sense of community.
The presence of Padma Shri awardee and celebrated gymnast Dipa Karmakar added inspiration to the gathering, particularly the young athletes. Her participation motivated attendees, symbolising perseverance and dedication in achieving excellence.
The marathon saw enthusiastic involvement from diverse groups, including youth, women, children, and senior citizens. Beyond the run, various patriotic activities were organised, fostering a deeper sense of belonging among the participants.
Medals and certificates were distributed to winners across multiple categories, marking a joyous conclusion to the event. The spokesperson highlighted that such initiatives strengthen the bond between the armed forces and the local community, promoting a collective spirit of pride and gratitude.
Vijay Diwas, observed annually on December 16, commemorates the Indian Armed Forces’ victory over Pakistan in 1971. The decisive 13-day war ended with the surrender of General Amir Abdullah Khan Niazi and 93,000 Pakistani soldiers to the Indian Army and the Mukti Bahini. This historic event is regarded as the largest military surrender since World War II.
