Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma meets Tripura CM Manik Saha to discuss Assam-Agartala road expansion and power cooperation, aiming to ease traffic and optimize energy resources between the two states.

On Thursday, Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma arrived in Tripura for an official visit and paid homage at the revered Tripura Sundari Temple in Udaipur. Later in the evening, he met with Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha at his official residence, where the two leaders engaged in a significant discussion about pressing regional issues and future cooperation.

Following the meeting, Dr. Saha expressed his gratitude on social media, stating he was “deeply touched and immensely honoured to warmly host Hon’ble Chief Minister of Assam, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma Ji.” The cordial exchange highlighted the growing partnership between the two northeastern states.

During a press briefing on Friday, Dr. Saha revealed that the central topic of discussion was the widening of the Assam–Agartala road at Churaibari, a critical connection point between the two states. He underscored the increasing traffic congestion on this route, which has become a bottleneck for commuters and transporters alike. Both leaders agreed that expanding the road on either side would significantly ease the flow of vehicles, improve connectivity, and boost trade and travel efficiency.

Another major point of discussion was power cooperation between Assam and Tripura. Both states currently enjoy a surplus in electricity production. Tripura has been exporting power to neighboring Bangladesh, while Assam is interested in supplying its excess electricity to Tripura. Dr. Saha mentioned that the existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Tripura and Bangladesh regarding power export will expire in March 2026 but may be extended. Future arrangements for power import and export between Assam and Tripura will be evaluated in this context to optimize energy resources in the region.

In addition to infrastructure and power issues, the leaders discussed broader themes of regional development, governance, and the welfare of their people. Both states are governed by “double-engine governments,” a reference to the political alignment of state and central governments, which facilitates faster development projects.

While elections in Assam were touched upon, Dr. Saha clarified that the upcoming Autonomous District Council (ADC) elections in Tripura were not part of the discussion. This indicated that the focus remained squarely on collaborative development rather than political maneuvering.

This high-profile meeting between Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma and Dr. Manik Saha reinforces the commitment of both states to strengthen ties, improve infrastructure, and cooperate in critical sectors such as energy. The focus on road expansion and power collaboration is expected to bring tangible benefits to the people of both Assam and Tripura, fostering regional growth and stability.
