A gang of five armed assailants attacked BJP’s SC Morcha Mandal President of Banamalipur assembly constituency Suman Das on early Tuesday morning.

The assailants, who were evidently on the prowl in the early morning for him and well aware of his schedule,  swooped down on Das while he was going for his regular morning walk at Chandrapur area and hacked him with sharp weapons. Das was severely injured in face and head. The assailants fled after locals rushed in. Das was rushed to AGMC where Dr Siddha Reddy and other senior doctors attended him. Later Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha who himself is also a Maxillofacial surgeon went to AGMC and attended the injured party colleague. His condition was reported to be critical.

The attack triggered massive sensation heated up  the political atmosphere as the BJP alleged the assailants were opposition workers and the attack was politically motivated. Senior BJP leaders including Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, former Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, Speaker Ratan Chakrabarty and others rushed to the AGMC and accused the local mafia affiliated with the opposition for the assault.

“Politics over dead bodies won’t be tolerated any more in Tripura”, the Chief Minister warned.

Biplab Kumar Deb said he had already spoken to DGP Amitabh Ranjan and asked him to take actions against the assailants. Das himself could identify four attackers and gave the police their names.

Police meanwhile arrested two assailants who were identified by the victim during treatment.

In a social media post from Tripura Police handle said, “One Suman Das was attacked this morning by a sharp cutting weapon in the Aralia Area, Agartala. He could identify and share the names of two attackers during treatment. Both of them have been arrested”.

Police said,it was fall out of business rivalry and was not related to politics.

“Prima facie it is a case of business rivalry. Patrolling has been intensified”, police stated.
