Union Home Minister Amit Shah will inaugurate the Joint Regional Rajbhasha Sammelan in Agartala, Tripura, bringing together 3,000 officials from 20 states to strengthen official language policy, promote Hindi and regional languages, and explore AI-driven language solutions.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah will inaugurate the Joint Regional Official Language Conference (Rajbhasha Sammelan) in Agartala on Friday, marking a significant step in promoting India’s official language policy and strengthening linguistic harmony across regions. The high-level event will witness participation from more than 3,000 senior officials, representatives, and experts from Central government offices, public sector undertakings, and banks.
The conference, being held in the capital city of Agartala, is the first of its kind in the state of Tripura. It will bring together representatives from the Eastern, North-Eastern, and Northern regions of the country, making it one of the largest official language gatherings in recent years.
According to Anshuli Arya, Secretary of the Department of Official Language under the Ministry of Home Affairs, the conference aims to review the progress of the Official Language Policy and promote greater use of Hindi along with other Indian languages in administrative and official work. Officials and experts from nearly 20 states are expected to attend.
Participating states from the Eastern region include West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar, and Jharkhand. From the North-Eastern region, Assam, Tripura, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, and Sikkim will be represented. Northern states such as Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh will also take part in the deliberations.
Arya highlighted the growing role of artificial intelligence and modern technologies in addressing language-related challenges in governance. She noted that innovative digital tools are increasingly being adopted to ensure efficient translation, documentation, and communication in multiple Indian languages.
Referring to the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Arya said that both the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister frequently use simple and accessible Hindi to connect with citizens. She added that the Home Minister often writes official letters in the respective official language of the concerned state, underlining the government’s commitment to linguistic inclusivity.
Emphasising the Union government’s approach, Arya clarified that there is no question of imposing Hindi on local or regional languages. Instead, the policy encourages the promotion of Hindi alongside the 22 scheduled Indian languages to preserve and strengthen the country’s rich cultural and linguistic heritage.
During the conference, 80 Regional Official Language Awards for the year 2024–25 will be presented to Central government offices, public sector undertakings, and banks for exemplary implementation of the Official Language Policy. In addition, selected City Official Language Implementation Committees will receive the Nagar Rajbhasha Karyanvayan Samiti (NARAKAS) Rajbhasha Samman.
Awardees have been selected based on quarterly progress reports submitted through the official information management system. They will be honoured with certificates and shields in recognition of their efforts to enhance the use of Hindi and other Indian languages in official communication.
The inaugural session will also witness the release of a special Northeast edition of “Rajbhasha Bharati,” prepared by the Department of Official Language. Two books — “Indian Languages and the Official Language Hindi – Timeless Works” and “Timeless Inspiring Verses of Amritvani Sanskrit” — will be launched during the event.
An exhibition showcasing innovations, best practices, and achievements related to official language implementation will be organised at the venue. Various banks, literary institutions, and other organisations will display initiatives demonstrating effective language use in administration and public services.
As part of the broader programme schedule, a yoga session aimed at promoting a healthy and stress-free lifestyle among officials is being organised. The session includes simple asanas, pranayama, and stress-management exercises under the guidance of experienced instructors, reflecting the government’s focus on holistic well-being alongside administrative efficiency.
The Department of Official Language was established as an independent department on June 26, 1975, to ensure the effective implementation of constitutional provisions relating to Hindi as the official language of the Union in the Devanagari script. It conducts four regional official language conferences every financial year to review progress and encourage wider adoption of Hindi in official work.

This conference marks the second joint regional meet of the financial year 2025–26. The first was held earlier at Devi Ahilya University in Indore. Officials believe the Agartala conference will further strengthen coordination among states and central institutions in promoting multilingual governance and administrative transparency.
With thousands of participants, high-level discussions, award ceremonies, book releases, and technology showcases, the Rajbhasha Sammelan in Tripura is expected to reinforce India’s commitment to linguistic diversity while ensuring effective implementation of the Official Language Policy nationwide.
