Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), as expected, has officially announced Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) Mayor Dipak Majumder as its candidate for the forthcoming Ramnagar Assembly by poll. Scheduled to coincide with the Lok Sabha elections for the West Parliamentary Constituency on April 19, this by poll has garnered attention as a crucial contest for the BJP. Majumdar will fight the CPM’s former MLA Ratan Das who was fielded this time again in a straight poll battle.
Majumder, currently serving as the Mayor in the BJP-led AMC, expressed profound gratitude towards the BJP’s central leadership, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP National President JP Nadda, and Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, among others, for bestowing their faith in him. His nomination was formally declared by Arun Singh, BJP National General Secretary and In-charge, in a statement released on Friday.
Ramnagar holds a special place in Majumder’s heart, as it is his constituency where he enjoys widespread recognition and support.
In fact, his name was making the rounds from the very beginning soon after the incumbent BJP MLA Surajit Datta popularly called ‘Sunu da’ passed away recently.
Majumder exuded confidence in the electorate’s backing for the BJP. He pledged to continue the developmental initiatives initiated by the late Surajit Dutta, under whose leadership the Ramnagar constituency witnessed notable progress.
Highlighting the transformative changes ushered in by the BJP-led government in Tripura since 2018, Majumder underscored the strides made in various spheres, including developmental projects, governance, and fostering a climate of peace. He expressed optimism in securing victory for the BJP not only in the Ramnagar bypoll but also in both Lok Sabha seats, citing the widespread support garnered by the party.
Acknowledging Majumder’s candidacy, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha extended his congratulations and urged the electorate of Ramnagar to support him by casting their votes in favor of the BJP’s ‘Lotus Symbol’ on April 19. Saha emphasized the importance of reinforcing the “double-engine government” led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the continued prosperity of Tripura.
Dipak Majumder’s entry into the electoral fray marks his second bid for mainstream election on a BJP ticket, following his unsuccessful attempt in the 2013 assembly elections from the Khowai assembly seat on a Congress ticket. The Ramnagar seat fell vacant following the demise of Surajit Dutta in December last year, necessitating the upcoming bypoll.
Majumder is set to face competition from Ratan Das, the Congress-supported CPI-M candidate and former MLA, in what promises to be a keenly contested electoral battle.
