Ali Fazal shares his experience of working in Metro… In Dino, revealing how co-stars Aditya Roy Kapur and Fatima Sana Shaikh helped him adjust to Anurag Basu’s unique style. He also spoke about preparing for his role as a musician in this upcoming film releasing on July 4, 2025.
Bollywood actor Ali Fazal, known for his versatility and powerful performances, is all set to return to the big screen with the upcoming ensemble drama Metro… In Dino. Directed by the acclaimed Anurag Basu, the film also stars Aditya Roy Kapur, Fatima Sana Shaikh, and veteran actor Pankaj Tripathi. As anticipation builds for the film’s release on July 4, 2025, Ali has opened up about his first experience working with Basu and the unique atmosphere on the film’s sets.
In a recent interview with IANS, Ali shared that he felt quite anxious during his initial days on the set. Despite his experience in the industry, the actor admitted that he was uncertain and even confused when he first walked into the filming environment. This was in stark contrast to his co-actors Aditya Roy Kapur and Fatima Sana Shaikh, who appeared relaxed and in sync with the director’s process—likely because they had already worked with Basu in the 2020 film Ludo.
Recalling the moment, Ali said, “I was very anxious. Because all these people—Adi, Fatima, Pankaj sir—have worked with him in ‘Ludo’. So when I went to the set, I was like, ‘What’s happening? You guys are so relaxed. What’s the script? Where? What’s happening?’” He continued, “They told me, ‘Give it 2 days. Then you’ll start understanding his method’.”
Ali eventually embraced the process and decided to surrender fully to Anurag Basu’s unique directing style. According to him, Basu had complete control over the narrative, especially because he was heavily involved in the editing process. “With somebody like him, you can trust. I didn’t think of how the larger narrative was shaping up because he was already at the edit table, deciding the fate of the characters. It’s a very tricky film,” Ali explained.
Interestingly, Ali’s character in Metro… In Dino is that of a musician, a role that required him to revisit his musical skills. Fans will recall his performance of “Give Me Some Sunshine” in 3 Idiots, a song that became iconic for its simplicity and emotion. However, the musical journey in Basu’s film proved to be far more demanding.
When asked if his past experience with the guitar helped him in this role, Ali replied, “‘Give Me Sunshine’ had a very simple chord structure. But in this one, the songs composed by Pritam are far more complex. I had to learn. For some shots, I really had to learn the chords because these are not simple tunes. You have Pritam da and all these celebrated singers and musicians. Suddenly, you are sending such complex compositions. I said, ‘I can’t’. But we tried to figure out the best way.”
