Surveen Chawla calls her Criminal Justice 4 role the “emotional core” of the series. She opens up about portraying Anju Nagpal and working with an exceptional team. Chawla also discusses her powerful transformation in Rana Naidu 2. Read on for exclusive insights into both performances.

Actress Surveen Chawla has revealed new insights into her powerful role in Criminal Justice Season 4, describing her character, Anju Nagpal, as the “emotional core” of the gripping legal drama. The series, now streaming on Disney+ Hotstar, continues to captivate audiences with its nuanced storytelling and strong performances, and Chawla’s role appears to be a standout.

In a recent conversation with IANS, Surveen delved into what makes her character so emotionally resonant. “See, for me, Anju Nagpal, my character, is the emotional core, the epicentre, the emotional epicenter of the show. And I think she’s calm; she’s composed. She’s in the midst of a storm but not letting it out, not letting it show. She’s keeping it all suppressed inside of her,” the Hate Story 2 actress said.

Portraying a woman who maintains her composure on the surface while struggling with an emotional storm inside, Chawla finds the character both challenging and deeply compelling. It’s this layered complexity that drew her to the role in the first place. “What drew me to the part was all of this and much more, which I can’t reveal as we speak,” she added, hinting at more plot twists and emotional layers to come in the season.

Beyond the script, Chawla highlighted the collaborative spirit and quality of the team behind Criminal Justice 4 as a key reason she took on the project. “More than just the part, I think it’s also the entire team—you know, with such fantastic actors like Pankaj ji, Zeeshan, Shweta, Mitaji, Barkha, and everybody on board. Even, for that matter, Ira, who’s playing my daughter. I mean, everybody was so amazing. The cast matters. The director matters.”

Chawla expressed her admiration for director Rohan Sippy and was excited to finally work with him. “I’ve been wanting to work with Rohan for a very long time, and finally, when I did get the opportunity, obviously, I wanted to grab it. The Applause team, the Hotstar team—I think it’s all in all, you know, like a well-curated recipe,” she shared.

This philosophy reflects Chawla’s holistic approach to choosing roles. While a strong script is crucial, she believes the people involved make the ultimate difference. “Even the best-written stories can falter without a capable and committed cast and crew to bring them to life,” she noted. For Chawla, the strength of a project is deeply tied to the team’s cohesion and vision.

Criminal Justice 4 stars acclaimed actor Pankaj Tripathi in the lead role and features other prominent actors like Shweta Basu Prasad. With Rohan Sippy at the helm, the series continues its tradition of exploring the complexities of crime, law, and justice through multi-dimensional characters and morally gray situations.

Meanwhile, Chawla is also garnering attention for her performance in Rana Naidu Season 2, which began streaming on Netflix from June 13. She reprises her role as Naina in this gritty family-crime drama. However, the second season introduces a new dimension to her character.

“She’s changed gears,” Chawla explained. “She’s no longer a silent observer. Naina is a woman who wants answers—and she’s not afraid to go after them. She’s demanding more accountability and stepping up to take control.” This evolution showcases Chawla’s ability to bring strength and emotional depth to the characters she portrays.

Rana Naidu Season 2 stars Rana Daggubati, Arjun Rampal, Kriti Kharbanda, Sushant Singh, Abhishek Banerjee, and Ashish Vidyarthi. With its intense drama and character transformations, the series has been well-received by audiences.

Surveen Chawla’s recent roles in both Criminal Justice 4 and Rana Naidu 2 underline her versatility as an actress and her instinct for choosing emotionally rich and narratively strong projects. Whether it’s Anju’s silent strength or Naina’s assertive transformation, Chawla continues to prove why she remains one of the most compelling performers in the digital space today.
