Agartala Press Club held its annual elections on Sunday, electing a new managing committee amid strong voter turnout and journalistic unity.
In a vibrant display of democratic spirit and journalistic camaraderie, the Agartala Press Club held its much-anticipated elections on Sunday, ushering in a new managing committee following the club’s annual general conference.
The atmosphere was charged with excitement and anticipation as members cast their votes to elect a new team that would steer the club forward. When the ballots were finally counted, senior journalist Pranab Sarkar emerged victorious as the newly elected President, marking a new chapter in the club’s leadership.
The contest for the post of Secretary witnessed a commanding victory by senior photojournalist Ramakanta Dey, who not only retained his position but also secured the highest number of votes—153, defeating his rival Biswendu Bhattacharjee, the candidate from the ‘United Progressive’ panel. Despite the setback in the Secretary race, the ‘United Progressive’ panel managed to secure five out of the eleven posts on the committee, reflecting a balanced outcome.

In another key result, seasoned journalist Chitra Roy clinched the position of Vice President, adding to the experienced leadership team. Meanwhile, Kamal Chowdhury and Abhishek Dey were re-elected as Assistant Secretaries, and Ranjan Roy successfully retained his post as the Treasurer, signaling continuity in the club’s financial management.
The newly elected executive committee members include Mihir Lal Sarkar, Abhishek Debbarma, Biswajit Dey, Santosh Gope, and Ranjit Debbarma, all of whom bring diverse experience and enthusiasm to the committee.
The results were formally announced on Sunday evening by Advocate Sandip Datta Chowdhury, who served as the Returning Officer for the elections. The announcement brought an end to a closely watched election process, drawing applause from supporters and participants alike.
While celebrations echoed through the club for the winners, the elections also saw notable defeats. Prominent names such as Jayanta Bhattacharjee and Arun Nath (both presidential candidates) Sajjad Ali (vice-presidential candidates), and Sourajit Paul (Assistant Secretary candidate) were among those who could not secure a seat this term.
With the new committee now in place, expectations are high among members for a renewed focus on journalistic welfare, press freedom, and unity within the media fraternity in Tripura. As the Press Club turns the page, all eyes are on the new team to deliver on their promises and uphold the legacy of the institution.
