In preparation for upcoming elections, a contingent of 685 jawans from Tripura’s elite Tripura State Rifles (TSR) will be deployed for polling duties in Mizoram and Madhya Pradesh, according to officials.
A senior TSR official revealed that the troopers, led by two senior officials, will first be dispatched to Mizoram for the state’s 40-member assembly elections, scheduled for November 7. Following their service in Mizoram, the contingent will proceed to Madhya Pradesh, where elections for the 230-member state assembly are slated for November 17. The vote count for both states, along with Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, and Telangana, will occur on December 3.
The TSR’s India Reserve (IR) battalions have a history of providing security and performing election duties in various states across India during Assembly and Lok Sabha elections. The troopers are well-trained in counter-insurgency operations, and their exceptional performance has played a crucial role in countering terrorism in Tripura over the past four and a half decades.
Within the IR battalion, approximately 75 percent of personnel hail from Tripura, while the remaining 25 percent represent diverse regions across the country. The TSR, consisting of 14 battalions, primarily comprises IR battalions, which can be deployed in any state of India as needed by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
This deployment underscores the critical role played by specialized forces like the TSR in maintaining security and facilitating the democratic process during election seasons.
