The High Court of Tripura has asked the state government to take immediate steps for shifting the sale and slaughter of animals and birds in the open streets and public places. The Division Bench of Chief Justice Indrajit Mahanty and Justice SG Chattopadhyay recently directed the AMC counsel to file an affidavit regarding “the schedule of completion of the Slaughter House/ Abattoir with the limits of the AMC within two weeks’.

The High Court was hearing a PIL filed filed by Advocate Ankan Tilak Paul to prohibit the illegal selling and slaughtering of animals (pigs, chicken, goat etc) by the side of the streets and public places in Tripura and to ban the illegal meat shop owners who are selling and slaughtering animals without valid licenses or permission from Municipal Corporation.

After hearing the PIL, the Court further directed “the AMC and its enforcement wing to upraise all such vendors throughout Agartala.to move to locations where permission may be considered by Municipal Corporation and to carry out the trade-in a manner which is hygienic, sanitary as well as appropriate for human consumption. Such exercise be carried out forthwith and action be immediately initiated to stop the illegal sale at various locations where they are operating without necessary license”.

An affidavit to this effect shall be filed within four weeks. The matter will be heard again on December 14 next.

Advocate Arijit Bhowmik argued in favour of the petitioner in person, Advocate Ankan Tilak Paul.
