Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha paid an unannounced visit to the GB Hospital on Thursday. Accompanied by Health Secretary Dr. Debashis Basu, the Chief Minister’s visit included an extensive tour of various hospital departments, as well as interaction with both healthcare professionals and patients.

During the inspection, Chief Minister Dr. Saha visited several critical areas within the hospital, including the Medicine and Dialysis units. He examined the conditions and facilities. Additionally, Dr. Saha also took time to inspect the boys’ hostel of Agartala Government Medical College, ensuring that the accommodations for medical students were up to standard.

Dr. Saha, in the course of his visit, engaged in conversations with doctors, patients, and hostel residents. He inquired about any issues or challenges they might be facing, aiming to gain insights into the quality of healthcare and living conditions within the hospital and its associated hostel.

Following his visit, Chief Minister Dr. Saha addressed the media, expressing his overall satisfaction with the hospital’s infrastructure. He commended the dedication of the medical staff, acknowledging their efforts in delivering quality healthcare to the citizens. Dr. Saha noted that the primary need appeared to be maintenance and attention to minor issues, rather than significant structural changes.

The Chief Minister identified some minor issues, including problems with ventilation in the Medicine ward, and promptly conveyed necessary instructions to the hospital authorities to address these concerns.

In response to a query regarding a shortage of nurses in the hospital, Chief Minister Dr. Saha announced plans to recruit 175 additional nurses once the Model Code of Conduct for the upcoming bye-election ended. He further disclosed that efforts had been made to increase the patient bed capacity and introduce new departments in the GBP Hospital, all aimed at enhancing healthcare services.

Chief Minister Dr. Saha acknowledged the excessive patient load on the GBP Hospital and assured the public that the state government was actively working to strengthen District Hospitals to better distribute the healthcare burden.

Furthermore, during his visit, the Chief Minister extended financial assistance to some patients whose families sought help for treatment, emphasizing the government’s commitment to providing support and care to those in need.
